Eden Wood and Princess Canopy Beds on ABC news

Apparently and much to our surprise, Eden Wood has stepped down from her wining streak in child beauty pageants. ABC news was there to cover the story as was Good Morning America. In all, the interviews were informative and deliciously edited, which gave it an air of hard core media hype. (an always needed important attention source for starlets in making)

Eden Wood is a serious worker for her young age, a true go getter. She has accomplished more in her young age than most adults in mid age. That being said, we are proud of her here at Princess Canopy Beds for her many achievements and successes. We offer her a hardy Mazal Bueno! (good fortune! in Ladino) We hope her much continued success as she steps into uncharted territories and makes her way into the Hollywood mainstream and other notable business ventures. We know that all her hard work will coalesce into something good, wholesome and ultimately lucrative.

By the way, our joint venture together was showcased on the media footage, which was unexpected but very welcomed!

We've been getting so much attention lately, notwithstanding its been caused by numerous factors. One factor is that we have been in business now for nine years solid, for many that is simply a milestone in itself. We keep our philosophy simple: Make and sell the cutest princess themed canopy beds available for anyone who wishes to purchase them. We have sold thousands of beds to princess' all over the world and if you commit to buy a bed, you will receive your bed. That is our commitment to our valued customers. In other words, we love to make little girls happy and feel like real princesses.

Second factor, our beds offer new children's furniture technological advancements very few people are aware of. This is the least understood and unfortunately least spoken about aspect of our bed business. Princess Canopy Beds has given many hours of research, many hours of thought and engineering into the design of our canopy bed frame. We have gone through numerous phases in understanding which sub strata platform is best suited for our bed frames, and what is the best hardware for construction purposes and fit. Though it may "look" simple, there are about 29 specific plan details that go into producing one Princess Canopy Bed frame. Very few people outside of the manufacturing industry know what it takes to produce a product for mass production. We at Princess canopy Beds have had to learn this process from the bottom up. Princess Canopy Beds has invested time and money into producing a bed that is manufactureable, safe, and that has aesthetic appeal. Again we are in business to provide the very best quality at a reasonable price, without going outside of the United States of America to achieve it.

Our Princess Canopy Beds are manufactured in the United States of America. We strongly believe that products made in the USA are better and should adhere to a higher standard. We believe that the World deserves a well made product that is produced in the USA. This reasoning can, in the long run maintain our recognized manufacturing status abroad and in house. We could go to China and manufacture there and inadvertently reduce our prices as many, if not all manufactures are doing, but refuse to do so for many reasons already stated i.e, safety, quality and integrity.

Very few people know about the wood powder coating process. This is a huge factor in the manufacturing and quality of our Princess Canopy Beds. First of all, we are committed to the safekeeping of our environmental resources. We know that wood depletion is a real global issue. Which is why using substitutes or in our case wood byproducts, helps make recyclable wood material a "green" worth while alternative, while maintaining a balance in our global resources for future generations to enjoy. We use HDF (High Density Fiberboard) a wood byproduct that is safe and engineered to be strong sub strata platform for manufacturing quality furniture goods. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) has been used as an alternative for real wood products for years. Most hospitals and restaurants use the real wood alternative MDF, for their furniture and cabinetry products. They last long and are cost efficient because of manufacturing ease and a low cost alternative to using real wood. However, up until the process of wood powder coating came along, manufacturing with MDF was limited to a three stage manufacturing process. That is cutting/shaping, painting/curing, edging/banding, depending on what tools are used and what paint is used, this process can take a while until the product was ready to package. With the advent of the wood powder coating process and CnC machinery to cut shapes, manufacturing cycle times are virtually cut in half, cutting down on overall manufacturing cost. The CnC cuts/routes multiple shapes in minuets and does so consistently and without errors. Once the shape has been routed from a CnC machine it then is powder coated. The wood powder coating process is always even, keeping the surface flawless at all times. Any powder discards are reusable, so there is virtually no waste and harm to the atmosphere making this process "green" too. Once the powder is shot onto the product it is oven baked at a high temperature. Hence, it is why we use HDF, the high density and low water/sap content in this wood byproduct, ensures an even, flawless finish every time as it can withstand high temperatures without warping the material. In all, using CnC and wood powder coating process cuts down in the manufacturing time by eliminating edging/banding process all together, and there is no curing time for paint. Once the products come out of the oven they can immediately be placed in a package for order fulfillment. Our products are manufactured to be knock down or lay flat like Ikea with a European cam hardware system.

The finish on a wood powder coated material is virtually indestructible, in that you can take a hammer to the surface and it won't chip. Compared to the regular painting process, this is a huge benefit. One, it has less chances of being damaged while moving or transporting. Two, children wont be swallowing deteriorating paint ever. Wood powder coating contains no lead either so in terms of child safety it is a altogether a great benefit.

As I stated earlier, very few people know about the advantages of our product outside of it looking "spectacular" and "princessy" which in itself is very cool. But given that our products have been engineered to be green and safe for children there is no reason why our beds should not be coveted by princess' everywhere.

When we attended the Plano Texas Universal Royalty Beauty Pageant in March of 2011, we were bewildered at the site of our target audience (little contestants) being so drawn to our bed. It was like eye candy to them, and they flocked to it in droves. We literally could not keep them off our bed. We loved it because it is a visual appealing bed for children. It has visual appeal that cannot be dismissed, we saw it with our own eyes and have pictures to show it!

Another wonderful development for Princess Canopy beds: Eden Wood is the New Miss Princess Canopy Beds spokesperson. This is also so cool, because we know she really wanted and loved our bed. It seems as if it was just yesterday that we were in Plano, Texas for the Universal Royalty Beauty Pageant. Which for us was thrilling to be a apart of. Seeing all the beauty contestants and the excitement in the air, some of it certainly due to the Big Princess Pink Canopy Bed. Some of it due to the fact that there was three TV camera crews filming the contest and the contestants. In other words, it was a big hoopla of fashion, excitement, fun, nerves and 80's routines.

For one, the 80's...The music, hair and the dance moves. It was sheer delight to see the little ones dance and revisit the 80's with such gusto! Oh did I mention it was crowded, standing room only? Yes, the place was packed which added to the buzz in the air, not to mention perspiration from the parents and every other adult present.

Seriously, the winner miss Alex Howe went away with the Big Princess Pink Canopy Bed, while miss Mia Spargo took home the coveted Costume Rack. And miss Eden Wood went away with being our national and international representative. The Australian beauty pageant controversy, one coin two sides.

Some of the controversy with the Australian child beauty pageant is centered around the hypothesis that "healthy child development" is threatened by child beauty pageants. Because, child beauty pageants promote "increased body dissatisfaction" , " indicates a trend towards increased feelings of ineffectiveness", "greater impulsive behaviors", "difficulty trusting interpersonal relationships". This "study" was conducted by Anna Wonderlich in the Journal of Treatment and Prevention 2005. This is also the ammunition that the Australian parents against child beauty pageants is using to "promote" there views. The assumption is, that child beauty pageants according to Wonderlich is bad for children's development.

With all "studies", personal biases usually go unaccounted for. This has been a recurring topic in postmodern philosophy i.e., that objectiveness in truth analysis is a myth which helps to reinforce a biased opinion at best. In other words, if I set out to write an objective analysis about the effects of child beauty pageants, good or bad. According to Postmodernist theory, this analysis is assumed to be biased, based on personal motivations i.e., subjectivity. Therefore "objective truth":

...involves the belief that many, if not all, apparent realities are only social constructs, as they are subject to change inherent to time and place. It emphasizes the role of language, power relations, and motivations; in particular it attacks the use of sharp classifications such as male versus female, straight versus gay, white versus black, and imperial versus colonial. Rather, it holds realities to be plural and relative, and dependent on who the interested parties are and what their interests consist in. It attempts to problematise modernist overconfidence, by drawing into sharp contrast the difference between how confident speakers are of their positions versus how confident they need to be to serve their supposed purposes. We have all been privy to the studies of eggs and cholesterol. Some studies according to the Mayo clinic in particular Thomas Behrenbeck, M.D., Ph.D. writes that eggs contribute to high cholesterol levels and should be eaten with caution at best or avoided at worst. Contrast this with, Dr David Katz M.D. who is Director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center, who recently wrote in the Huffington Post saying:

In the case of 'eggs'clusion, I once believed it was right -- and banished eggs from my own diet for the better part of 20 years. But I watched the science as it evolved, and did what scientists are supposed to do: kept pace with it. I have reintroduced eggs back into my my own diet, and into the advise I offer my patients. We can see by these two conclusions, that realities in "eggs as bad for consumption" varies, even in the medical world where scientific methodology and close analysis in scientific objectivity (truth) can be inconclusive. As we speak, we have two camps of thought concerning eggs, one pro and one con. Both have invested time and money in the research, both have "conclusive evidence" showing that they are scientifically right! Which is why its so important to get more than one medical opinion, because Medical opinions vary substantially.

Postmodernist, would say they (researchers) were never objective in the first place. That the research was intended to solidify a position in the medical industry. Bringing recognition to said researcher, rather than objective proof. The motivation for publication in journals, plays a great factor in medical or social "studies" as a way to increase finances, keep tenure or increase industry recognition. Yet subjective motivations such as these, are rarely ever considered or discussed when analyzing existing data or "studies". In other words, there always exist two sides to a coin.

Perhaps we can also apply this reasoning towards child beauty pageants as well, that is, see it from another angle a healthier angle.

A child beauty pageant parent writes:

my daughter is 17 and has been doing pageants since she was 4 and she is much more well rounded and confident and an all-around amazing person today, because of her pageant experiences. Pageants can be so wonderful for children who want to participate in them- they really give the girls an opportunity to go after goals, learn interview and talent skills, as well as gain so much personal poise, self-confidence and all-around good life skills... learning to be a gracious winner as well as a good sport if you don't win- learning to take turns - learning to go for a goal and try try again- learning that beauty comes from the inside out and it is who you are as a person that makes a difference- that confidence comes from within - that being a good person and doing community service makes a difference, and to never give up on your dreams. I applaud all the children that get up on stage, no matter who they are or where they are from!

As parents, we have vested interest in seeing our children grow up into healthy, confident, and industrious adults. Can it be that Wonderlich's study on child beauty pageants, based on personal experience, be biased? What I personally witnessed at a child beauty contest, was like any other child event where children compete for prizes, honors, or titles. (though it was much more fashion orientated)

Life is full of these events, whether it be scholastic competition or sports events, It's inevitable, proving or showcasing talents will take place whether we like it or not. Showing children to behave in sportsman like quality, showing poise, being confident, achieving goals, these are all positive attributes that contribute in forming centered adults. Also, if taken to an unhealthy level, competition can lead to self-centered behavior. Then again, anything can be taken to a unhealthy level, even the most benign things have proven this.

Toddlers and Tiaras, like any reality TV show capitalizes on drama, and as we all know drama sells. Toddlers and Tiaras, is one vehicle that shows a one sided, perhaps even unhealthy side of child beauty pageants. Then again, it has also popularized and even grown the industry by considerable measures. Which is helpful as exposure, is a desired effect in any business strategy. Either way, there is more to this coin than what meets the eye...

The Australian beauty pageant controversy, a response.

We are new to this controversy, its been rather interesting on many facets to understand the ruckus that children's beauty pageants have garnered overseas, in particular Australia.

We were the recent sponsors of Universal Royalty Beauty pageant in Plano, Texas this year. We had the opportunity to actually attend for the first time this interesting phenomena. It was a mixture of different feelings like; thrilling, competitive, anxious, hard work, and obviously disappointing for the non winners, and highly satisfying for the winners.

As Mrs Friedman summarized in her blog , these same feelings and effects are present in children's sports. I played sports in school and I encountered hard work, dedication, anxiousness, and obviously disappointment when we did not win. Yet, I encountered great satisfaction when we did win.

These ingredients, if redirected correctly, i.e., hard work, dedication, and team spirit, are all essential ingredients that make for well rounded and industrious adult.

Was the child pageant show, exploitative as the press in Australia has over emphasized? No, I did not see that or possibly failed to notice it. I saw a lot of hard work from both the parents and the children. Was the child pageant show over sexual? No, that is ridiculous. Though I saw a parent who could have used more class with a Dolly Parton (skit). Again, the child is not to blame for any lack of class, it always points back at the parents who are lacking in their parental skills. Ultimately, this is not a ethical question either.

If Australian parents are concerned because these child beauty pageants demean little girls, I have a hard time believing that hypothesis. Psychologically, I don't know the ratios between girls who grow up attending child beauty pageants versus girls who did not attend child beauty pageants and what the lasting effect positive or negative it has.

As a parent I can say that children who grow up in a stable home with stable parents, usually grow up with self confidence and respect themselves more, than in homes where a parent is gone or their is abuse. These abnormalities in "parenting or lack of", I have witnessed in many instances first hand.

That this type of venue encourages "pedophiles" is absurd. Pedophiles are encouraged by their own demented behavior. Where do we draw the line? Do we stop buying bathing suits for our children? Are public swimming pools pedophilia magnet centers? Who knows what the answers to these questions are? And/or are these the right questions to ask? For example, in Japan there is an overwhelming attraction to girls wearing school uniforms as being sexy, you can even say that it is stereotypically exploited in the media. Again, the question is where do we draw the line? Pedophiles are attracted by innocence, that's where the danger lies. It doesn't matter what the girls or boy wears that attracts a pedophile. Ultimately, its the child's innocence that stirs a demented mind to react.

We have been constantly reading posts from girls who cannot, for what ever reason, participate in child beauty pageants and mostly they are sad. They wish that they could be a part of the nostalgia, romanticism, and fun of a beauty pageant. I can safely say, that child beauty pageants are not for everyone, and my statement is not based on beauty as a requirement alone. From what I saw, it takes much more than physical beauty to win, it also takes a lot of heart.

When Princess Canopy Beds, went to Plano Texas for the Universal Royalty Beauty Pageant, we went bearing gifts. Besides sponsoring the Pageant with a signature Princess Canopy Bed for the Supreme grand winner we also had an adorable costume rack for a raffle free of charge that we would give out to another deserving princess, and there were a lot of them!

With all the hoopla surrounding this intense pageant and all the contestants getting prepared to give it there all, there was still time it seemed to fill out the required entry form for the contest to win this adorable costume rack.

Princess Canopy Beds arrived in Dallas on Thursday very excited about the events that were to unfold. A few days prior we were looking at images of young pageant contestants. We happened to come across a very stunning little girl named Eden Wood who captured our attention and imagination. Princess Canopy Beds fell in love with her face and thought, "wouldn't it be great to have Eden Wood be the new face to represent our bed lines."

We set up our bed, and costume rack for the Universal Royalty Beauty Pageant, held at the Southfork Hotel in Plano, Texas. We were full of anticipation, as we had donated our bed to sponsor the winner of this coveted pageant and raffled off our costume rack to the lucky winner.

Mrs. Annette Hill , owner and founder of "Ultimate Royalty Beauty Pageants", was so excited about our new partnership as we are too. We came prepared and brought gift bags for the contestants filled with princess delights, ballons and prizes.

Our set up was perfect as we had great product placement. As the contestants arrived, they could see our bed in full view! When the girl's were told that our bed was the "Grand Prize" they were ecstatic! Each contestant headed straight to the bed upon arrival, we decided that it would be impossible to not let the girls play on the bed. As soon as they saw the bed, they immediately went to it and jumped right in. At one time during this melee there could have been at least 10 girls on the bed!

To say that our Princess Canopy bed was eye candy for these darling contestants would be an understatement. These seasoned veterans of beauty pageants were stunned to be confronted by so much princess power emanating from our princess Bed. To add fuel to the fire, unsuspecting moms were telling their little girls to," work hard" and "strut your stuff" so they could win the bed!

One little girl came in and said in her deep Texan drawl, "I'm going win that bed, momma"! It was too cute. Did we mention, that in all this pandemonium, three camera crews were also taping the Pageant! Toddlers and Tiaras, Belgium TV and Australian TV were there to film the whole thing!

Not only was it exciting for the beauty contestants but it was also very exciting and rewarding to us. As most business owners know, the daily grind of business ownership and task management is tedious to say the least. Being involved in this pageant was a way for us to experience first hand what our beds do to the little girls for whom they are intended for.

The results of the pageant has been overwhelming. The little beauty contestants worked so hard and gave it there all. This made for a very good show full of beauty, talent and Princess power. We were so impressed by the amount of work that goes into putting all of this together. Our cheers go to Annette Hill, all the contestants and their parents for making this experience worth while. Also we want to thank the staff at Southfork Hotel in Plano, Texas for all their behind the scenes, help and assistance that they provided, they are such good people.

At the end of the show, Princess Canopy Beds was able to speak to Miss Eden Wood and manager about the teaming together of Eden and our bed lines. It is official "Eden Wood" is the new cover Girl for our National and International Sales Campaign!

The reason why Americans need to buy American

With banks reeling on credit issues, Americas two front war, and the mortgage meltdown, its no great surprise that we must reevaluate how and where we spend our hard earned cash.

Economist have been issuing warnings long before the crisis was fully felt in our pocketbooks. The swan song has been primarily, that outsourcing to foreign countries will eventually blow up in our faces.

To a capitalist mind, slicing significant cost on manufacturing goods is the sweetest melody one can entertain, especially if they are marked up significantly and sold at current US retail prices.

Retrospectively however, the investment of manufacturing that was initiated outside of the US was realized at the expense of future US interest. Meaning-the" savings", of outsourcing were temporal compared to the "loss" of future growth in the US economy. In this instance, growth means; keeping jobs in America, using American skilled labor, keeping American suppliers busy, etc... The list is endless when it comes to opportunities that could have , but have not been realized, because of the greediness of American capitalist.

Blaming the Chinese or any other foreign polity for our economic woes at this point is cowardly and irrelevant. The blame must be placed on ourselves both as manufacturers and consumers.

Our mantra should be at this point, let us buy American...let us put back into the future of our children's children and secure for them a means to be financially secure...

WoW...That storm sucked...Ouch

The storm over the last week has left us without a house or shop. Living in Kentucky has been pretty rough, twice without electricity for an indefinite amount of time. We were told that the storm might cause some problems...Let me tell you it was about 2:30 AM when I knew the lights went out. The ice was so bad that my outside power cable bent to were I could physically touch it.

The next morning my neighbor came to my house and told me if he could take some pictures of our backyard. I agreed and went out to see the ice and snow on our property, it was breathtakingly beautiful. But beauty has a price, no electricity and no heat, trees down, a total mess.

We decide with my wife to tough it out that evening and stay in our house. We played games on our dinning room table under candlelight. I cooked on the grill outside some warm food for our bellies.

We brought a mattress down near the fire place and got all the comforters for the kids to stay cozy and warm. At about 3:00 AM I felt really cold and I asked my wife how she felt? She said that she was cold...So I went on a mad search for extra warmth and found some misc. bedding in the basement, I made sure the kids were covered and I went back to sleep.

At about 8:00 AM We were awoken by the sobs of my youngest son Yishai, who was cold even with his pajamas and three comforters and surrounded by our other children. No doubt, he was cold, I was cold, we were all very cold...That's when my wife and I decided that staying in our house was not an option it was 37 degrees inside...Ouch

We decide to heed North towards Indiana about 15 min from my house to get some warm breakfast and to search for a hotel. We found out that all the hotels were full in almost three states, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio...With that information we got a bite to eat at IHOP and were planning our next move towards Tennessee, when a friend called to let me know his home was available for refuge.

We said Yes, and stayed in Indiana for Shabbat. Hopefully soon our light will come back on.

It's time again for a New Year of creating more Princess Beds and furniture for those pretty little princess!

This year we believe is going to be great. We have so many new things that are going to happen, such as preparing for the ABC show in Las Vegas. The ABC show is a showcase of children's furniture makers, suppliers and what not. We are excited and a bit nervous to be part such a huge show.

Joanna is also pregnant with our 6th baby, so we are anticipating all that comes with a new child. Our kids are more than excited and they are hoping that it is a girl! We are also going to be expanding our website and adding more cool furniture and accessories.

On another note, we are happy to announce that Princess Canopy gives back to the community. This last year, (its hard to believe that another year has gone by) for winter holidays we sent a bedroom set to Make a Wish Foundation in Ohio. The lucky young girl, Ally, was blessed by a whole room ensemble that was built around our fabulous beds! More will be posted about this later, so keep tuning in.

Just like every home in the country, we too are prepping for our Holiday rush.

This year has been very different from past years in that we have relocated to Kentucky. The fun thing about relocating, is the opportunity to meet new people, and the excitement to explore new places.

That being said, we are always eager to develop lasting relationships with all our wonderful customers. We know that when it comes to children we try to make the best decisions for them.

Just today I recieved an email from a past customer who stated that, her child is still loving her bed even after two years of owning it.

Her concern was that the need to change the bed's look by, aquiring new custom bedding. Which we sell just for that reason, a change of pace and look.

Key elements of our bed design

When we designed our bed system. Some of the priorities were safety and accessibility for our 18 month old princess Miriam. We knew that at that age, falling of a tall bed would be an issue. So I developed the safety lip that was about a four inch lip around the perimeter of the bed. This insured that any rolling to the left or to the right would be met by a lip that would stop her from falling down.

The other element was that I cut a 20 inch gap in the center so that she could easily enter her princess chambers without having to climb over any walls. The next thing that I designed was a formidable yet elegant stepping stool that helped my daughter to reach her mattress.

With these design elements established on her sleeping area, we knew that she would be safe from any accidents at night.

Concerns about the design of our beds

When we build beds for kids, it's with an understanding that the beds will be safe and dreamy.

With that said, Princess Canopy is committed to using materials that are "green", in an effort to contribute less to the depletion of our natural resources.

We use MDF an engineered wood by product, that is a smart easy to use product, that enhances the lines and contours of our canopy beds.

On top of that, we Powder Coat our beds which is not the typical way of painting that we grow up with. This new revolutionary process is baked on to give the finish a scratch proof resistant surface that is impenetrable to wear.

it doesn't end there, we added an agent to the paint which kills 99% of bacteria on contact!

The design and set up is easy, as we have added European cam system that is fool proof, but sturdier than screws.

The quitting the day job didn't happen overnight, and it hasn't been a cake walk either. In fact, many people who own their own companies attest to the fact that having your company is at best difficult and at worst impossible. Yet for Jo and I, it has been a series of lessons that are invaluable.

The challenges started when we couldn't find furniture out there that was like what we envisioned. Not to say that Bombay Kids, doesn't have some cool things available. However, at the time it seemed impossible to have the "princess bed room suite" available that didn't look cheap and gaudy.

We are happy to provide a cool alternative, to the typical girl's twin bed with dresser bedroom set. My daughter Miriam has the coolest bedroom, she is spoiled because she becomes the "guinea pig" to all our new prototypes. She has a revolving bedroom set every time my wife thinks up a new fabric choice for our bed line.

When we first started designing and building prototypes for our company. We started visiting furniture stores and department stores. I'm telling you, their is almost nothing interesting, and it seemed as if the designs were repetitive, and boring.

After a while of dead ends, I made an attempt to research children's furniture makers in our industry. The fact was that the Industry was wide opened because, the designs for kids furniture was a continuum of what was designed in the 70's with very little change. Designers just weren't paying attention to children's bedroom furniture. The Chinese weren't going to do it either, they lack the Western design element, and for the most part, they were busy turning out obsoleted children's bedrooms at Penny's to a dollar, which flooded the market.

However, In my research, I also discovered children's furniture Industry articles relating to a new crop of designers. Wouldn't you know it, those new designers were mom's and dad's, who were fed up with the lack of diversity in children's bedroom furniture! People like yours truly, who took it upon myself to make furniture in our garages.

The reason for this entry is that when we first started with our company about 7 yrs ago, ran into a complication with what my wife Jo (Joanna), calls "cute" kids stuff. Her concept of cute obviously is more refined than mine, especially when it comes to kids stuff. Nevertheless, we were stumped when trying to find that right "transition bed" for our little princess Miriam.

side note: My beautiful daughter Miriam, who happens to be our model for our web site www.princesscanopybeds.com , is our inspiration for our children's furniture business.

Anyway, that perfect "transition bed", that is-the bed that proceeds a crib-which usually for kids means twin size, couldn't fit in our daughters room. Our first house was a 40's home that had the smallest rooms known to man kind. My daughters room, the smallest of all the rooms, couldn't accommodate a twin size bed without hogging all her limited room space. This meant that all the cool bedroom sets that are available at places like Rooms To Go, coundn't fit her room.

There's a cliche that goes,"necessity is the mother of all invention", and to us at that time it was more than true. Therefore, with some freebe wood that I had taking space in my garage, I embarked on what has morphed into www.princesscanopybeds.com, but at the time it was just a needed bed for my daughters small room. The coolest thing about our humble beginnings was that the design of our first princess bed, again being humble, was perfect. My company was interviewed by an Oregon Newspaper the Bend Bulletin

The article was in response to a friend who thought we should get some exposure by our company being showcased in the local paper. In the interview, the Interviewer raised a million dollar question about manufacturing in the USA, How do we compete with the Chinese?

After all, almost everything we buy in the USA is made in China. It's absurd, just how much is manufactured over there. The other day I bought my son a MLB baseball with the Braves insignia on it, an Official American baseball, for the Major Leagues. Well, in small letters the "Made in China" logo was printed on the ball. You can't escape the fact that we are an outsourcing country and almost all of our outsourcing form Chevy car parts to Major league baseballs are manufactured in China.

So, to ask the question how do you compete with China?, is a pertinent question for American manufacturers. As Americans we need to be realistic and truthful about our commitment to keeping jobs here in the USA, especially, when the bottom dollar is concerned. Is it feasible to have a commitment to the American dream of making a living here while prices skyrocket on everything from fuel to real estate?

My answer is YES, as long as we have an edge, and that edge is a commitment to quality, safety and longevity in products that are made in the USA. Everyone has read of the gross neglect of safety regulations that the Chinese have perpetuated on goods that are brought into the USA for consumption. How lead in the paint of baby toys are common place. There are no strict manufacturing regulations in China hence sheer neglect is evident when millions of dollars of toys are recalled, because in China negligence is common place, but in America we care!

The wood powder coating industry is relatively new in the States. The first to use this manufacturing process I believe is Finland? Anyway, here in the USA, we have a few plants that are using the process to create unbeatable surface finishes.

The color variations are unlimited and you can add texture to the finish as well. The first time we ran into this process was at the AWFS show in Las Vegas, NV http://www.awfsfair.org, a state of the art show, that showcased the newest developments in the wood working industry. What really stunned us about this painting process was the durability of the finished surface.

My wife and I, were busy checking out all the new tools of the trade trying to figure out how we could finish our bed's edges. It was the last day of our stay in Las Vegas and we were burnt out on walking the huge floor layouts. Suddenly, we noticed some cool products that had very interesting finished and seamless edges. Also, the rep was walking around with a hammer encouraging potential clients to take a swing at the finished pieces.

We were totally shocked with our new discovery. First, the surface paint was brilliant, the edges were seamless, and "finished". Then, to add to our amazement, the paint could take some damage without chipping or paint loss. This was the answer to two of our existing challenges.

The first one was durability, at the time we were using a paint called durapoxy which was to our knowledge the best water soluble paint on the market. However, as with all paint it wasn't impervious to damage, nicks or scrapes. Second, the problem with edging was difficult to incorporate into a manufacturing process because, it was always a three cycle operation: cut the wood, paint the wood, put edging on the wood.

With wood powder coating, the edging was incorporated into the cutting of the wood stage, and the painting was an all over effect that eliminated the need for an extra edging cycle. Which in manufacturing is a huge bonus in time spent and money saved. Add to that, the quality aspect of the finished product, and you have a win win situation.
